Falls From Ladders Lower As Latest Figures Show 11% Drop
FOR the second year running, figures released by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) reveal that the number of injuries involving the use of ladders and step ladders has fallen from 2132 in 2007/08 to 2011 in 2008/09 and 1817 in 2009/10. This despite an average overall increase of 51 per cent in the total number of falls from height reported to HSE over the same period. The figure of 1817 compares with 2631 ladder-related injuries reported to HSE in 2001/02, a drop of 31 per cent.
According to the Ladder Association, no one single initiative is responsible, but rather a combination of initiatives driven by the association itself and in collaboration with other agencies, in particular HSE and the Access Industry Forum (AIF), of which it is a founder member.
“Whatever the sceptics may say, it cannot be denied that these welcome statistics coincide with a significant increase in the number of users successfully completing a Ladder Association training course,” comments Chris Ball, chairman of the association. “Since the training scheme was first launched in November 2005, the year-on-year increase, after an initial exponential growth in the first few years, has been consistent at around 25 per cent for the last couple of years.” Read this post
HSE In New Rational Approach to Ladder Regulation
Whilst the Health & Safety Executives focus on ladder safety may have improved accidents the Work at Height regulations implemented in 2005 have led to confusion and costly interpretations that are suffocating British industry and not necessarily improving safety.
In March 2011, the Government established an Independent Review of Health and Safety legislation to make proposals to identify opportunities for reducing the burden of health and safety legislation on UK businesses while maintaining the progress made in improving health and safety outcomes. This review was chaired by leading risk management specialist Professor Ragnar Löfstedt.
David Gray, Managing Director of TB Davies, said: “The well intentioned regulations have mutated themselves into a bureaucratic nightmare where the simplest tasks cannot be completed without employers wrapped in reams of red tape and escalating costs passed to consumers.” The Löfstedt report recommends that a number of existing regulations are amended, clarified or reviewed, including the Work at Height Regulations 2005. Fake Telescopic Ladders Fail Government Tests
If your ladder suddenly collapses underneath you, then you may have a product that does not meet the safety requirements required by law. A test of ten aluminium steps and ladders, by the Danish Labour Inspectorate found eight of the ladders tested did not meet safety requirements. This was despite the fact they bore the CE and DS/EN 131 standards, which should guarantee they meet minimum requirements. Two ladders were so dangerous that inspectors demanded their immediate withdrawal from sale.
Labour Inspectorate Chief Supervisor Charlotte Friis said, “The result is quite simply appalling. We have very clear rules on which loads a ladder must comply before it can be sold in stores. Now it turns out a lot of ladders on shop shelves look ok, but in fact do not meet the standard requirements.”Tests found ladders collapsed under a weight far lower than they should be able to endure exposing both householders and tradesmen to injury. TB Davies Group: New Factory Extension will Help Aid Increasing Demand
The UK’s leading manufacturers of Ground Support Equipment, Ladder and Access equipment has completed expansion of its factory headquarters in South Wales.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Press Release) – Mar 22, 2011 – TB Davies UK, based in Bridgend, has completed a new 30,000 square foot extension doubling the factory floorspace to over 65,000 square feet.
The new extension will also house an all new powder coating paint plant. A bespoke training suite has also been constructed for certified Ladder Association training courses for the company and its dealer network. The development is the first major addition to the new 12 acre site acquired last year.
The factory expansion is also part of TB Davies commitment to lean production as previously the company was split over several sites in the town. TB Davies Cardiff Managing Director David Gray commented: “This expansion is part of the continued growth of our factory on the Bridgend site, and is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the area. Operating from one modern site with huge investments in new machinery will ensure we not only deliver a better product but associated costs and lead times will also be reduced.”
The powder coating process will provide significant product benefits as the paint has excellent scratch resistance properties. It also has a pleasing ‘smooth’ appearance and forms a sealed skin around the product thus minimising corrosion risk.
The new extension has also seen the installation of two bridge cranes that will allow the precise movement of heavy loads throughout the production area and keep the factory floor clear of obstructions.
David Gray continued: “We have long been known for robust, high quality ladder products and are seeing our reputation increase dramatically for our bespoke design and build service. The new extension will help us increase our product range and production capacity.”
TB Davies was established in 1945 and its ladder and access products are used in wide range of industries including manufacturing, engineering, retail, construction, and aerospace.
