Aquila Gain Safe Access To Aquila Sub Station Network

December 12, 2011

Aquila is responsible for delivering electricity for what was formerly known as the Midlands Electricity Board to around 2.3 million connected customers across Shropshire, Staffordshire, the West Midlands, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. Transferring electricity across a network of 63,000km of overhead line and underground cable, at 132,000 volts, 66,000 volts or 33,000 volts. Following an incident in a sub-station the company decided to review the safety aspects of their access equipment in used in sub-stations throughout their region. The objective was to ensure the electrical safety of their ladders as well as the stability to enable the technical staff to work from the top platform.

Solution Suggested by TB Davies

TB Davies suggested a GRP Midi Work Platform, a form of fixed platform step with a glass fibre frame and aluminium treads/handrails. The glass fibre frame would provide safe spark free insulation against electrical current and provide a solid base on which to work from, within sub-stations. Further orders have been placed to provide each sub-station with this step, through the Aquila region in the UK.
