5 Essential Ladder Safety Tips to Start #LadderSafetyMonth Right

#LadderSafetyMonth TB Davies

March is #LadderSafetyMonth

March is #LadderSafetyMonth, a time dedicated to highlighting the importance of safe ladder use at home and in the workplace. At TB Davies, we’re committed to helping you work smarter and safer. To kick off this month of awareness, here are five essential ladder safety tips to ensure you start off on the right foot (and step).

1. Choose the Right Ladder for the Job

Selecting the right ladder is the first step to ensuring safety. Using a ladder that’s too short, too tall, or not designed for the task can lead to accidents.

Key Considerations:

Ladder Type: Identify whether you need a step ladder, extension ladder, or speciality ladder.

Load Capacity: Check the ladder’s duty rating to ensure it supports your weight and any tools you’re carrying.

Material: Fibreglass ladders are ideal for electrical work, while aluminium ladders are lighter and suited for general tasks.

Inspection & Maintenance

Routine inspection and maintenance are critical to ensuring your ladders remain safe and reliable. Damaged or worn ladders are a leading cause of accidents, making regular checks a non-negotiable step in ladder safety.

Key Tips:

Inspect Before Each Use: Always check for visible signs of wear, such as cracks, bent rails, or missing parts. Ensure all locking mechanisms are functional.

Conduct Regular Maintenance: Schedule periodic inspections by a qualified professional to assess the ladder’s structural integrity.

Remove Damaged Ladders: Any ladder that shows significant damage should be tagged and removed from service immediately.

2. Inspect Your Ladder Before Use

A quick pre-use inspection can help you identify potential hazards and prevent accidents.

Inspection Checklist:
  • Look for cracks, dents, or bent rails.
  • Ensure all rungs are clean, dry, and free of oil or grease.
  • Test the locking mechanisms to confirm they’re secure.
  • Check the feet for wear or damage to prevent slipping.

If your ladder shows any signs of damage, tag it and remove it from service immediately.

3. Set Up Your Ladder Correctly

Proper setup is essential for stability and safety.

Setup Tips:

Stable Surface: Place your ladder on a firm, level surface. Use stabilisers or anti-slip mats if necessary.

4:1 Rule: For every 4 feet of ladder height, place the base 1 foot away from the wall or structure.

Secure the Ladder: Use tie-offs or have someone hold the ladder to prevent movement during use.

Avoid setting up your ladder near doors, windows, or other high-traffic areas without warning signs.

4. Climb with Care

How you climb matters just as much as how you set up your ladder.

Climbing Best Practices:

Always face the ladder while climbing.

Maintain three points of contact (two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand) at all times.

Avoid overreaching or leaning to the side. Instead, climb down and reposition the ladder.

Climb slowly and deliberately, ensuring your footing is secure before moving.

5. Use Accessories to Enhance Safety

Ladder accessories can make your work easier and safer.

Recommended Accessories:

Stabilisers: Prevent tipping by increasing the ladder’s contact area.

Ladder Levelers: Ideal for uneven surfaces.

Tool Trays: Keep your tools within reach to reduce overreaching.

Safety Harnesses: Necessary for tasks at significant heights.

Investing in the right accessories can provide additional stability and help prevent common accidents.
