Ladder falls often happen not on the climb itself, but because of a poor setup. Choosing the right stabilisation, correct setup angle, and compatible accessories can significantly reduce this risk. Here’s how to do it right.
Get the Ground Right
- Start with a stable surface:
- Solid, level ground
- Avoid loose materials or slopes
- Use ladder mats or boards if the ground is uneven
Correct Ladder Angle
A safe ladder should be about 1 unit out for every 4 units up (the “4:1 rule”). This helps ensure balance and reduces the risk of slipping.
Secure Ladder Top and Base
- Tie off ladders where possible
- Use stabilisers to widen support
- Use safety feet for slippery surfaces
Accessories can help, but only when used correctly and with the right ladder type.
Accessories that Support Safety
Useful accessories include:
- Ladder stabilisers
- Anti-slip feet
- Ladder levelers (for uneven ground)
But remember:
Accessories do not make up for a fundamentally wrong ladder choice.
Common Setup Mistakes
- Leaning ladders against unstable structures
- Overextended ladders without locks
- Not using stabilisers on smooth surfaces
