TB Davies Technical Director Appointed Chair of BSI Ladder Standards Committee
TB Davies Technical Director Francis Camilleri has been appointed Chair of the British Standards Institution’s B512 Technical Committee, which is responsible for developing and maintaining standards for portable ladders in the UK.
The committee oversees important standards, including BS EN 131, covering the design, testing and marking of ladders used across domestic, trade and industrial environments. It also coordinates the UK’s contribution to the development of European ladder standards through CEN Technical Committee 93.
Francis has served as a member of B512 for six years and is also Chair of the Ladder Association Technical Committee. Through these roles, he has represented the UK at European standards level and contributed to revisions of key ladder safety standards.
His appointment comes at an important time for the access industry. Recent Ladder Association market surveillance found that more than 80% of telescopic ladders tested failed critical safety assessments, with many products incorrectly claiming compliance with EN 131.
Francis said:
“Ladder standards exist to protect people who work at height every day. The B512 committee carries out important work to ensure those standards remain current, rigorous and enforceable.
“The volume of non-compliant products reaching the UK market is a serious concern. Standards must provide regulators, enforcement bodies and responsible manufacturers with the technical foundation needed to address that problem.”
Francis’s appointment recognises his extensive technical knowledge, practical industry experience and long-standing contribution to improving ladder safety.
As a fourth-generation Cardiff manufacturer with more than 80 years of experience in the access industry, TB Davies remains committed to supporting the development of safer products, stronger standards and better guidance for everyone working at height.
